Mayor Mike Purzycki said today that he and members of his staff will take part in two events to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 15. The Mayor also thanked the sponsors and volunteers who are helping to make these events possible.
The Mayor’s Office – along with sponsors the Chemours Company, the Delaware 87ers, Tandem Music Group, Wilmington Police Department, Blue Diamond Dental and Rock Solid Contracting – will gather at the Police Athletic League of Wilmington, 3707 North Market Street, at 9:30 a.m. on Monday to assemble personal care kits for 450 homeless citizens to include men, women and children.
Each personal care kit will include, among other items, a variety of toiletries, a blanket, snacks, bottled water, and a personalized note of encouragement. Once the kits have been assembled, volunteers will deliver them to homeless shelters throughout the City of Wilmington.
“We are grateful to the Mayor’s Office for the chance to contribute to this event,” said 87ers President Larry Meli. “Together we are building a stronger, more unified, and ultimately safer community and we are proud to be part of that effort.”
“We at Chemours are happy to partner with the city on an opportunity to help those in need,” added Chemours representative Toyge Davis.
Citizens are invited to join members of the Mayor’s Office at Theatre N, located at 1007 North Orange Street, at 1:30 p.m. for a panel discussion titled “With Gratitude.” Leaders from the sports, entertainment and business communities will gather to discuss the importance of giving back to the community.
Hip-hop producer, songwriter and Tandem Music Group president Jahlil Tucker, better known as Jahlil Beats, will serve as a panelist at the “With Gratitude” event. “I am honored to contribute to this service project,” said Tucker. “It’s important for all of us to engage in these kinds of projects and to bridge the gap between the entertainment industry and civic engagement through the community.”
The event at Theatre N is free and open to the public, but is limited to the first 200 attendees due to seating limitations. Attendees aged 12 to 19 will be eligible to win an Apple MacBook or two floor seats to an upcoming Philadelphia 76ers game that will be raffled off at the conclusion of the “With Gratitude” event at Theatre N.
