Residents in the city and throughout the nation are in outrage as a Howard High School teen, Amy Inita Joyner-Francis was allegedly attacked and killed by a group students in the high school’s bathroom just before first period. Wilmington police are currently investing.
Mayor Dennis Williams’ statement:
“We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy, and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the young girl’s family and friends as they grieve this terrible loss. Howard High School of Technology has a rich history in the City of Wilmington, and in this time of great tragedy, it is critical that we embrace the students, parents, faculty, and the entire Howard community.
“Our entire city is shaken by the loss of this child’s life, but in this moment we should all come together to work collectively to address the serious needs of our youth. As a community, I know that our strength comes from the commitment that we all have to support our children. Now, more than ever, is the time that we must demonstrate that commitment,” said Mayor Dennis P. Williams.
City Council President, Theo Gregory’s Statement:
“On behalf of all Members of Wilmington City Council, I express our condolences, support and prayers to the family of the child who died today as her family and friends grieve her passing. Council also extends its condolences and support to the school administration at Howard, and to the faculty and students as they stay strong and prayer together to overcome their hurt and grief. This is a difficult situation for everyone. These are the types of incidents that we pray won’t happen, but tragically they do and we find ourselves in a position to help and support each other as we try to learn from what happened. Council offers its support to the family and to the school during this period of mourning and healing.”
