Reconsidering Roots: Observations on the 40th Anniversary of a TV Mini-Series that changed the Way We Understood American Slavery
Saturday, January 14, 2017, 2:00 p.m.
Copeland Room, Delaware History Museum
Fee: $5/Delaware Historical Society members; $10/non-members; reservations requested, 302-655-7161.
Includes admission to the Delaware History Museum and the Mitchell Center for African American Heritage.
Kellie Carter Jackson, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Hunter College
As part of the 40th anniversary of the broadcast of the original television mini-series Roots (1977), we invite visitors to explore the meanings and memories of this milestone in the public presentation of black history. Carter Jackson’s presentation provides a framework for understanding the impact of Roots on interest in black family genealogy in the years since, as well as on interest in African cultural heritage and identity among black audiences, and interest in black history in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries generally.
We invite our audiences of all backgrounds to share their own memories of this shared experience of watching black history being made and black history being told, within families and across generations, and of discussing the mini-series, at school and at work, at home and across the country.

In 2005 we established Zeta CAN! in an effort to further our community outreach. Zeta CAN! – The Zeta Community Action Network, along with Epsilon Rho Zeta set forth to establish the Katherine B. Ross Scholarship in 2006, adding it to the chapter’s education portfolio. Preference for this scholarship is given to adult students pursuing the academic study of education. Since 2004, the General Scholarship has been awarded to deserving young women pursuing higher education in the New Castle County community. For over 60 years, the chapter has given insurmountable hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships and support organized charities. The Finer Womanhood High Tea is the culminating annual event highlighting these efforts.
