This year, 2011 Seaford School District Teacher of the Year Thonia Waters is the keynote speaker.  The 2012 theme is “Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope”.

The 2012 MLK Day of Celebration Community Recognition Award is Bernice Mitchell Edwards.

Mrs. Edwards is Executive Director of First State Community Action Agency, Inc.  Her career spans 32 years of work in social services and program management and administration through state and local, and county non-profit organizations.

Music will be provided by Gospel Jazz Saxophonist Tony Smith.

This talented artist hosts his own gospel jazz radio show on WFDU 89.1FM in Teaneck, New Jersey where he focuses on the instrumentalist side of gospel music. It only takes one note from his soothing horn to see that he is someone blessed with a special talent.   This is someone that has a message from God to share with others: “Do what God has called you to do”.

After the prayer breakfast, the celebration will continue with a youth oriented event held at the Seaford High School auditorium from 12 Noon to 3:30 PM.

Admission to the youth program is $2.50, and lunch will be provided.

Featured films are Children of the March and My Friend Martin.

Children of the March highlights the role of young students in the Civil Rights movement during the Birmingham, Alabama Children’s Crusade of May 2-5, 1963.

My Friend Martin is an animated film on the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

A variety of other activities, including crafts, story time, and kid-friendly information are planned.

Western Sussex MLK Day of Celebration is headed by Seaford City Councilwoman and Western Sussex MLK Day of Celebration Executive Director Pat A. Jones. The Prayer Breakfast will be held at 8:00 AM, January 16, 2012, at Heritage Shores Country Club, Bridgeville, Delaware.
