Girls Learn Great Business smARTS This Summer

Wilmington Fashion Camp Teaches Young Girls More Than Arts And Crafts

8 year old De’Lynn Williams is going to camp this summer, and is counting down the days until school ends. She is looking forward to starting another session of camp, making new friends, and reuniting with old. De’Lynn attended both winter and spring break Fashion Camps and is anxious to see what projects she will be creating this summer. She will be joining other aspiring young designers, girls ages 7-13, at Great Taste Design’s Fashion Camp in the Brandywine Town Center to learn about the world of fashion design. New to the camp this year is an additional business and marketing component that gives girls insight to the business and retail side of the fashion industry. Campers will enjoy creating a variety of art pieces, clothes, and accessories and have the opportunity to display or sell their work at an end of the summer showcase.

Great Taste Design Company has collaborated for a second year with New Castle County to provide the camps. Campers will have a rotating schedule of sewing, painting, illustration, pattern making, jewelry making, and girls life skills. Camp runs from 9:30am to 4:30pm and before and after care is available. The cost of tuition and materials is $165 per week.

This year, in addition to fashion design and girls life skills activities, campers will be able to learn the business side of the industry. “So often creative types are labeled as being strong on the creative side and not as strong when it comes to business, but it doesn’t have to be this way” explains camper director De’Yanna Harris. “We want to give our campers a head start to thinking about things from a business perspective.” Campers will participate in branding, business development, the four P’s of marketing product, price, placement, and promotion and apply concepts learned to mock business’ and simulations activities.

“I love sewing and my camp teachers,” says De’Lynn. “They teach us how to do really cool stuff and it’s a lot of fun.” As she holds up one of her sewing projects (a pink pull over shirt with ruffled detail) she states, “this is my favorite. At first I thought it was going to be hard but then I got the hang of it.”

Camp staff and volunteers aim to nurture a “can do” attitude with participants of this 10 week summer arts program. Participants can sign up for one week or the whole summer without duplicating activities. “I enjoy seeing the happiness that completing a new project gives our girls” says Harris. “Their projects are special and a reminder to them that they can accomplish anything they put their minds to.”

Occupying Minds Occupies Delaware

(1 vote)

February 11, 2012, was a monumental day at the Edgemoor Community Center in North Wilmington, DE. The "Occupying Minds" event sponsored by Artistik Designs, Inc., Hensekh Bak Re and Knowledge is Power Radio, was an overwhelming success. This event featured a Panel discussion of many things, but followed a specific format. First of all, a true history of the Indigenous people on the continent of America given beautifully by Mahiir Tarik Bey. Mahiir is originally from Dover, now residing in Wilmington. He is the co-host of Knowledge Is Power Radio on Wednesday nights at 9:30pm; which can be heard at www.blogtalkradio.com/knowledgeispower and is founder and operator of Artistik Designs Inc. Secondly, an awesome breakdown of the current state of mind and error in thought was laid out by the illustrious pioneer, Taj Tarik Bey, of Philadelphia, PA. Taj has been a pioneer in the Moorish Science Temple of America for quite some time, unselfishly devoting his time and effort to open the minds of the people. He has works in Camden, NJ as well as PA and a host of other states speaking.

The next speaker was Sabir Bey, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, now residing in Los Angeles, California. Sabir was featured on the historic "Hidden Colors" documentary, and host his own blogtalk show "Civil Alert Radio." He and Taj were on a multi-city tour from Atlanta to New York, and took time out to assist at the Occupying Minds venue. Sabir gave a heart felt discussion on various subjects such as holistic health, inspiring the youth, learning from and taking care of elders, and also mentioned actor Tyrese, who came to Delaware not long ago. While here, Tyrese spoke out on the air during a 101.7 Kiss FM interview about issues in Delaware, mainly the amount of liquor stores in proximity to school zones. Tyrese was told on the break of the show, if he did not apologize on air, his music would no longer be played on 101.7 Kiss FM. Tyrese replied, "So what!" This was felt among everyone in the room, and Sabir called for Delawareans to stand up and have a voice in the community.

Next was the dynamic lecturer, Hensekh Bak Re, of Philadelphia. Hensekh is also co-host of Knowledge Is Power Radio, and was very instrumental in the arrangement of the Occupying Minds Event. He demonstrated his knowledge of the doctrine and of a multitude of authors, including Dr. York. His bibliography was extraordinary and gave much insight into solutions that people could implement to bring forth a more harmonious society. Bro. Hensekh also freely took on many questions in the Q & A segment of the Panel. He was followed by the Grand Governess Abundance Child of Wilmington, who gave an excellent summary of organizations she has been instrumental in building and working to better the community. Lastly, Bro Kemitu Bey, of New York, spoke briefly on Parliamentary Law, but with such power, it immediately launched an array of questions from the crowd. There were several vendors at the event, such as; 5Linx Telecom, Dvd's, Books, and food products. If you missed it, they will be back in the community again, so stay aware. Peace and Life.
