New Hope Institute of Financial Literacy, a provider of seminars and consulting services for small business owners has announced that it will help promote Delaware State University's Center for Enterprise Development programs for small business owners, as well as their entrepreneurship programs for Junior and Senior high school students.

“I partnered with Delaware State University’s program because I am a firm believer in entrepreneurship, especially in these difficult economic times” says Shawn Myers, owner of New Hope Institute of Financial Literacy. “You would think the opposite would be true. But when you are talking about starting a small business we have to remember that we are not talking about taking on huge risks. You can start off small by working the business part time and gaining knowledge in at least five core competencies that every small business owner needs to have; accounting, finance, marketing, management and Information Technology. It should be clear now that we need to take more control over our own destiny. We need to understand that about 70% of a company’s expenses are related to its employees, so when times get tough it is the easiest expense for these companies to cut through payroll reductions and layoffs. Costs related to running the business, such paying for utilities and production materials often cannot be reduced.”

Delaware Center for Enterprise Development has been in existence since 1992 and has established a comprehensive list of programs and services to help small business become successful. One of the worst mistakes a small business owner can make is to try to go it alone. A good starting point for anyone who is thinking about starting a small business is to take the Core Four® Business Planning Course, which is offered as a four week class or as an independent study class.

In the coming weeks the Delaware Center for Enterprise Development will announce details about the upcoming Junior Entrepreneurs in Training Program which will take place on Saturday, April 24th, 2010 on the Delaware State University campus in the Martin Luther King Student Center from 8:30am until 2:30pm. This free, one day conference will include youth entrepreneurs, hands on entrepreneurship education, and a statewide youth business plan competition featuring JET students from participating schools and community organizations.

On March 29th, 2010 the first in a series of seminars will be offered by New Hope Institute of Financial Literacy at the Crystal Center in Wilmington, Delaware called Financial Planning and Decision Making.  This first course will address issues related to both personal and business finance. “The impact of starting and running a small business on someone’s personal finances is significant”, says Shawn.  “This class will be a little different from other personal finance classes people may have taken. We will focus most of our attention on how to put together, analyze and understand numbers.  Many of us are familiar with how to create budgets, but it is even more important to know how to create a personal balance sheet and income statement. You can then use that information to calculate financial ratios to determine the state of where you are financially. It is only after you have done this that you can create a winning strategy for how to successfully start and run your small business.”

To register for the March 29th seminar, please call 302-450-8245 or register online at www.newhopeinstitute.net . While you are there you can click on the “Resources” tab to access free information on business strategies, taxes, financial planning and other financial topics
