Delaware
State University will be the scene of the Third Annual All Star Weekend
Basketball Tournament (www.allstarweekend2.com)
on Friday, August 14th through Sunday, August 16th. All youth 8-18 yrs
and young adults up to 35 yrs are invited to participate in the All Star
Weekend Basketball Tournament 2009. The purpose of the tournament weekend
is to foster the development of scholar athletes. This objective will
be achieved through collaboration with the Delaware Multicultural and
Civic Organization Learning Center (DEMCO Inc), which is a non-profit
501(c)3 educational organization directed by Dr. Michael Casson (Dean
of Graduate Studies and Research, and Associate Professor of Economics
at Delaware State University).
The
3rd Annual All Star Weekend Basketball Tournament will integrate math,
reading, writing, and life skills with athletic development through the
implementation of skill drills, 5-on-5 competition, and basketball IQ
workshops for pre-teens, AAU teams, high school teams, and adults. The
basketball tournament will be held August 14-16th, 2009. Opening with
orientation on Friday, August 14 at 6 pm and concluding with championship
games on Sunday, August 16th. All activities will take place at Delaware
State University, located at 1200 N. DuPont Highway, Dover, Delaware 19901.
The tournament’s focus is to provide opportunity and exposure for
the BEST athletes on the East Coast who are seeking to pursue their basketball
career in college and or other basketball leagues.
The Adult division (18 and older) will consist of competitive 5-on-5 competitions, credit awareness workshops, an all-star game at the Wachovia Center, and an “Entertaining/Rucker style atmosphere.” The adult division will also have an opportunity to take advantage of their job opportunity workshops, where they will receive resume building information as well as on-site interviews.
The
Third Annual All Star Weekend Basketball Tournament has also teamed up
with the Philadelphia 76ers and will be sponsoring five (5) selected scholar
athletes to attend a full week of basketball drills and much more at a
76ers Camp, August 17-21, 2009 at the Western family YMCA in Newark, Delaware.
The mission is to keep teenagers off the streets by doing something positive
with their time. Plans for the keynote speakers include: Andre Iguodala,
Lou Williams and Thaddeus Young, to be confirmed and announced later.
The tournament message is to express the importance of a good education
and the hard work necessary for these athletes to achieve their goals
in life. Tournament organizers are currently working on bringing a professional
athlete to this year’s event to encourage education and healthy
living.
“Nothing of value comes without being earned. That’s why great leaders are those who lead by example first. You can’t demand respect because of a title or a position and expect people to follow. That might work for a little while, but in the long run people respond to what they see.” (Michael Jordan)
“Our hope is that this event will serve to develop positive and emerging leaders in the community by showing others that violence is not the answer and education is the key for success. Developing teamwork, respect and leadership is the first step to producing more positive leaders in the community” said Derek Thompson, Tournament Founder. In addition to the All Star Weekend Basketball Tournament Title sponsor DEMCO, Mr. Thompson also expressed his thanks and appreciation to Powell’s Insurance, Allstate, Keep It Movin Garments, Sounds of Tri State, Roma’s Pizza, Anwar’s Autos, Next Level Entertainment, A friend of the Family, and Stop the Violence Organization for their contributions and support in this annual event.
In addition to the basketball tournament, Derek Thompson is also hosting an after party the night of Saturday, August 15, 2009, at Leone’s Loockerman Exchange which is located at 1 West Loockerman Street in Dover, Delaware. The world famous DJ Drama and Philadelphia Eagles Shaheer McBride, LaSean McCoy, and Jeremy Maclin will be some of their special guest. Nuvo Liquors will host the VIP section.
