Afrocentric Poetry That Educates & Motivates
Amen to that! Originally from Brooklyn, Linda Hayes, took notice in the lack of Black history education in schools; and made it a prerogative to research and inform herself of the large contributions, we as African Americans, have made over the years. Seeing that we are being discredited enough via the Public School systems, Mrs. Hayes A.K.A Slendah, wrote this book to inform anyone from any decent, to understand the our history, heritage, and culture. African Americans have more to be proud of than overcoming slavery, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Peanut Butter. We have many contributions to the progression of the human race. In this book, she took some of what she learned in life and research and expressed it in poetic form. Slendah began writing poetry at the age of 14, shortly after her father died from a brain tumor. Writing was very therapeutic for her. Her inspiration to become a writer began during Black History Month at her previous job. Her company was celebrating by reading poetry from the books of various poets. When asked to participate, she asked if she may write her own poetry. When her co-workers heard her work, they encouraged her to keep writing and to get published. When Slendah isn’t writing or internet surfing, she is in her basement watching her favorite movies. Her husband built her own home theater in her basement! How cool is that?! Some of her favorite authors include Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Tananarive Due. Slendah has written four books to date. Her first three are poetry books which are titled “Life is a Roller Coaster”, “Life is a Roller Coaster 2”, and“Afroetry”. Her most recent book titled, “Grandma’s First Computer” is her debut children’s book. This very talented and beautiful Valentine’s Day baby resides in New Castle, Delaware.
