The vintage soul newcomer, whose voice and style remain true to the roots of jazz, also infuses an energy that is shaped by many different sounds and influences that will be sure to draw residents and visitors of all generations. After recent performances at the 2016 Grammy Awards with Ellie Goulding, a solo showcase on ABC Network’s Dancing with the Stars, and a transformative delivery of her singleRise Upon the BET special “Black Girls Rock,” Day will bring her incredible voice to the stage at the 2016 DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival.

“Billie Holiday is one of my major influences, as are Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Lena Horne, Dinah Washington and Stevie Wonder”, says Day. “Our newer jazz and soul singers like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and Jill Scott, and gospel singers such as Yolanda Adams and Kim Burrell, also heavily influence my work.”

“I think Rise Up resonates with so many because it talks about perseverance. It discusses persevering through struggle, criticism and rejection. It is a simple message of determination for yourself and others, and I think the simplicity of that is what resonates with people the most,” adds Day.

The DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival takes great pride in celebrating the full spectrum of jazz every year, with a special emphasis on the city’s unique place in the legacy of the genre. This year’s lineup pays homage to its history while celebrating the artists, events and moments that continue to shape jazz today.
